Once upon a time, a laser printer was a luxury item. Not anymore. Print and copy as much as you like.
Copying and scanning can be done easily enough from the front panel, but scanning is more easily done from the host. Windows software is included and support is built into the Mac. Scanning quality is good (up to 600DPI), but it's not photo-scan quality. Colors are a bit washed and detail is a little soft. But as a document scanner it's perfectly sufficient.
This very nice printer from Brother now brings all the advantages of laser printer at a very low cost. It's impressive right out of the box. There are no flimsy plastic extensions to manage paper flow. The paper tray is internal (it looks like it will hold a full ream) and the paper output sits nicely in an internal tray. This should help keep dust from accumulating on paper and going into the printer mechanism. It's clear this is a monochrome printer--the documentation steers you toward ordinary bond paper and away from all the coated papers you might use with a photo printer.
The print quality is quite readable. It's not as black as a good inkjet black, but I was able to print at 5-point resolution and easily read the result. And a very big plus is the ability to do double-sided printing without swapping paper around. Just specify double-sided output, queue the job and that's what you get. Nice. It's a little on the loud side: not terrible, but noticeable, and you will need to be prepared for a slight whiff of ozone when you print.
