Save the Wildlife

Illegal poaching and wildlife trafficking is the fourth largest transnational crime behind weapon, drug, and human trafficking, and funds other types of violence and criminal organizations across the globe. Passing I-1401 will help reduce that violence. In addition, many of the animals protected by I-1401 are killed for medicinal use despite no real evidence of the efficacy of these expensive treatments.

While New York and New Jersey have passed laws to protect elephants and rhinos, I-1401 will prohibit and strengthen the penalties for the sale, purchase and distribution of products made from a list of 10 endangered animals: elephants, rhinos, lions, tigers, leopards, cheetahs, marine turtles, pangolins, sharks and rays. Despite widespread public opposition to these practices, powerful special interest groups continue to lobby state legislatures and Congress to oppose common sense laws that would protect iconic species slipping toward extinction.

Save the Wildlife seeks to drive change at all levels of government that will protect Earth’s most precious wildlife. Originally established in April 2015 and supported by philanthropist Paul G. Allen, Save Animals Facing Extinction was created to support Initiative 1401, a first-of-its-kind ballot measure in Washington State which prohibited the purchase, sale, and distribution of products made from a list of 10 endangered animals. Working closely with partners from the nation’s leading conservation, education, and zoological organizations, as well as grassroots donors from across the United States, I-1401 passed with over 70 percent support in November 2015. Now, Save Animals Facing Extinction has relaunched as a national organization. We are expanding our focus to ensure that laws across the United States are just as strong, or stronger, to defeat poachers and wildlife traffickers.

The race against extinction is urgent and immediate, and the campaign to protect these endangered and exploited species needs your financial support and commitment.  Your support allows us to make an impact in saving endangered animals.  Funds raised will be used to support ballot measures, lobbying efforts, and other advocacy activities in support of laws protecting endangered species.

Together, we can make a real difference in saving animals facing the threat of extinction.

Your support is critical to our success.

Funds raised will be used to:

  1. Support ballot measures
  2. Lobbying efforts,
  3. And other advocacy activities to demand stronger laws protecting endangered species.
